Through the Valley of the Shadow of Death

With love, comes loss - and loss brings mourning. Alan Hargrave lost his 21-year-old son Tom to cancer. In One for Sorrow, he describes his family’s journey and his own struggles as a priest in the face of such a loss. Madeleine Davies lost her mother when she was just 12, and has now written a guide for bereaved teenagers, Lights For The Path – A Guide Through Grief, Pain and Loss. In conversation with John Pritchard, former Bishop of Oxford.

Alan Hargrave

After training as an Engineer, Alan worked for ten years with the Anglican Church in South America before returning to the UK to train as a priest. In 2004, after eleven years as vicar of a council estate, he became Canon Missioner of Ely Cathedral, retiring in 2016.  His most recent book, ‘One for Sorrow’, tells how he coped (or failed to cope) with the death of his son, Tom, from cancer.  Alan is passionate about justice, Yorkshire cricket, golf, his children and grandchildren, his wife Annie and, of course, the Almighty.

Madeleine Davies

Madeleine Davies is Features Editor at Church Times. She has also written for the Guardian, Financial Times, and Commonweal on faith and politics. Her first book draws on memories of her teenage years, and interviews with others bereaved as adolescents.
